• Brad Lander declared victory in the Democratic primary for city comptroller. He beat City Council Speaker Corey Johnson by 24k votes. (Jeffrey C. Mays for NY Times)

• He's not the first speaker whose political career has seemed to end with that title. Johnson isn't the first speaker to lose a bid for higher office. He joins recent speakers Christine Quinn and Melissa Mark-Viverito in hitting a political wall. (Emily Ngo for NY1)

• Purdue Pharma will shut down and pay $4.5 billion for its role in the opioid crisis. This was partially thanks to NY Attorney General Letitia James's office, which led to a 14 state lawsuit against the company. New York will receive at least $200 million for the next nine years. • Remember the hack of the City Law Department from June 5? Well, it's still going on and there is no estimate of when it may be resolved. Lawyers still don't have remote access to case files and the office is still primarily remote. The department failed to comply with a 2019 directive from the city to implement multi-factor authentication and this is all the result of one person's email login and password being stolen.
