• Seeking human connection? The Times suggests socializing while waiting in a Covid-19 testing line. This sounds like Stockholm Syndrome. (Alyson Krueger for NY Times)
• This Saturday marks the end of New York State's eviction moratorium. The state's rent relief portal is open to people facing eviction, and the Tenant Safe Harbor Act still protects tenants facing eviction in the face of Covid-related financial struggles. (Aaron Ginsburg for 6sqft)
• The city's schools have a new policy of how many cases of Covid-19 will trigger a school closure. If the rate of positive cases surpasses the rate across the city, an investigation will be launched. This seems like a very good way to codify the city sitting on its hands instead of proactively taking action. (Christina Veiga for Chalkbeat)
• Hundreds of students walked out of classes on Tuesday to protest the unsafe conditions in their schools, including Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, and Stuyvesant. (Jessica Gould and Sophia Chang for Gothamist)
• The city seems to have blinked in its stare down, with Chancellor David Banks beginning to talk about a remote option for the remainder of the year while blaming unions for not implementing it. Another good way to blame someone else while waiting for a problem to go away. (Alex Zimmerman for Chalkbeat)
• An update to the "Eric Adams gives his brother a $240k/year job" story. He's given his brother a different job with less responsibility that will still pay him $210k/year. Nepotism is not dead. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• Mayor Adams asked the Civilian Complaint Review Board, the agency charged with providing the city with police oversight, to reduce its budget by 3%. The CCRB's total budget of $24.5 million represents less than 0.2% of the NYPD's $10+ billion budget. (Christopher Werth for Gothamist)
• The best new restaurants in the city. (The Infatuation)
• Cutlets, a sandwich shop, is opening a permanent spot in Williamsburg. This seems like a great spot to great a chicken parm sandwich, dubbed "NYC's aphrodisiac of choice" in 2019. Yes, I did include this story only to refer to the headline "How chicken parm became NYC’s aphrodisiac of choice." Same as whenever I see a story about Union Pool, I will mention the bathrooms are regularly ranked as one of the best bathrooms in the city to have sex in. (Jennifer Rosini-Gentile for Greenpointers)
• Maybe you don't believe me? Gothamist put Union Pool on its list of "The Best And Worst Bars And Restaurants To Have Sex In" in 2011 and then ranked it #1 on its list of "The 10 Best Hook-Up Bar In NYC" in 2016, mentioning "The long lines for the private bathrooms that everyone's having coked-up sex inside?" Complex ranked it #2 on "The Best Bathrooms in NYC to Have Sex In" in 2014, calling them "the Chelsea Hotel of our generation" with it coming behind Bryant Park. For a complete look at the history, there is "How Union Pool Became the Horny Utopia of 2000s Williamsburg" by Allison P. Davis.
• The everything bagel is the king of flavored bagels, according to Grub Hub. Tomorrow (Saturday) is National Bagel Day. Celebrate appropriately. (Anna Rahmanan for Time Out)
•A sandwich delivery guide. (The Infatuation)
• Real Estate Lust: A $1.7 million co-op in Park Slope in the landmarked "Brooklyn's Flatiron" with Prospect Park views, three beds, two and a half baths, is steps from Grand Army Plaza, and more. (Michelle Cohen for 6sqft)
• Solving the great Sant Claus mystery of Tompkins Square Park. (EV Grieve)
• Seventeen businesses New Yorkers want to bring back from the dead. Once I saw Mars Bar on the list, I laughed that Mars 2112 should be on the list, and Shaye Weaver read my mind. Not listed: Grand Prospect Hall. (Shaye Weaver for Time Out)
• Looking to make a reservation at an impossible-to-get restaurant? Give Reddit a try where people are selling their non-refundable reservations. (Luke Fortney for Eater)
• Lots of people in "pet-free" co-ops have pets. How to handle getting an emotional support animal in a condo that does not allow pets. (Emily Myers for Brick Underground)
• The vampire crowd will no longer be able to visit Avenue A’s Key Food 24/7. Starting this year, the hours are 5 am - 1 am. (EV Grieve)
• NYC is officially the most stressed-out city in the US. THIS IS VERY COOL NEWS. (Anna Rahmanan for Time Out)
• 2021 in New York beer superlatives. (Brew York)
• A guide to cozy noodle soups. (Noëmie Carrant for RESY)
