• Joey Ramone might not have sold out while he was alive, but his music publishing just sold to Brookfield Asset Management. "Brookfield, like the malls across the country and real estate?" Yeah, a real estate asset management firm owns Joey Ramones's music. (Bill Pearis for BrooklynVegan)
• How do you feel about piles of trash out in the open vs. trash in containers? The city spent $4 million on a McKinsey study to answer this question. (Sophia Chang for Gothamist)
• New Maps: Proposed new City Council district maps were released. This is the fourth attempt at redistricting, with these maps receiving criticism for splitting the Amalgamated Houses in Coney Island between Democrat and Republican councilmembers. (Katie Honan, George Joseph, and Haidee Chu for The City)
• Erin Merdy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and nine counts of second-degree murder for the Sept. 12 incident, wherein she allegedly drowned her three young children. (Ben Brachfeld for Brooklyn Paper)
• The mayor has already decided where he'll deflect blame for the city's economic recovery being slower than the rest of the country: migrants. “This is undermining our economy and is undermining our attempt to recover in our cities that were already dealing with crises, from COVID to monkeypox, to crime, to housing.” -Mayor Adams. (Catalina Gonella for Gothamist)
• Luna Park in Coney Island was offered a ten-year lease extension and rent relief deal. Locals are fighting to add conditions to the lease that would benefit Coney Island and not only the corporate owners of Luna Park. The money you spend at Luna Park doesn't stay in Brooklyn; it goes to the European company that owns the park that wants a monopoly over the entire entertainment district. Instead, spend your money at Wonder Wheel Park and Coney Island USA. (Jada Camille for Brooklyn Paper)
• Gothamist deserves a side-eye for this headline: Staten Island House race suggests crime, the economy could matter more to voters than abortion. (Elizabeth Kim, David Cruz for Gothamist)
• Whose fault is it if students fail a difficult class? After receiving complaints about the extreme difficulty of Maitland Jones’s organic chemistry class at NYU, he was fired. The Dark Souls of college classes. (Stephanie Saul for NY Times)
• Unsettling: Applications for handgun permits doubled this year. (Louis Finley for NY1)
• If you're in Downtown Brooklyn, keep an eye open for "Witnessing" from artist Bradley McCallum. On old police call boxes are video and audio testimony from people who experienced violence at the hands of the police. (Anna Rahmanan for Time Out)
• An audit from the state comptroller of NYC high school graduates shows 57% of graduates are "college ready," and those who did go to college dropped out at a rate of 38% after six months or less. The audit states the city should do more to prepare for college no matter the path students take. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• In light of the story about a community board district manager's (I misstated they were a community board member in the last edition) retirement, basically robbing the board of all their funds, The City looks at retirement payouts, which have been over $84 million in the last five years to city employees who cash out their vacation, sick, and comp days from their entire careers. (Reuven Blau for The City)
• Ghost of a Dream and Dennis RedMoon Darkeem's art are displayed on Penn Station pillars. You are entitled to art in Penn Station but no place to sit. (Rossilynne Skena Culgan for Time Out)
• The seven best ways to get your NYC landlord to make repairs. Catfishing your landlord isn't on the list, but you should still consider it. (Emily Myers for Brick Underground)
• Double Chicken Please, Katana Kitten, Attaboy, Overstory, Dante, and Employees Only made Time Out's World's 50 Best Bars list this year. (Amber Sutherland-Namako for Time Out)
• 17 best spots to see fall foliage in NYC. (Devin Gannon for 6sqft)
• Apartment Porn: A $3.5 million Tribeca loft with three beds, 2,100 square feet, in a landmarked building, is a block from the Hudson, and more. (Devin Gannon for 6sqft)
• Toys R Us is back as an in-store shop at Macy's. In 1999, I worked at a Toys R Us on Long Island before going to college, and I had to clean up after a human had pooped in the bike aisle. I may not have the same affinity for Toye R Us as other people. (Anna Rahmanan for Time Out)
• Photos: New York Comic Con day one. (Amanda Hatfield for BrooklynVegan)
• A look at Michelin's 2022 star changes in the city, including Peter Lugers losing its star, two new two-star restaurants, and sixteen new one-star restaurants. (Ryan Sutton for Eater)
• Photos: NYC's hawks in autumn. (Laura Goggin Photography)
• Ten things you may not have known about Green-Wood Cemetery. (Lucie Levine for 6sqft)
