Are you an NYC-based artist or illustrator? I’d love to talk to you about a new project that I am working on. Please email me at thebriefly@gmail.com and let’s talk!
• Remember the story on Tuesday about the group taking over the Trump Links golf course in the Bronx? Well, forget it because CORE Services Group, led by the CEO of a homeless shelter operator, has pulled out of the deal. The new operator appears to be Bobby Jones Links, a company out of Atlanta. (Claudia Irizarry and Katie Honan for The City)
• Aladdin is the first Broadway show to cancel a performance due to Covid-19 breakout cases amongst the company. The performance was canceled 30 minutes before curtain, which was also one day after the show reopened. (Ben Yakas for Gothamist)
• Curbed makes the case that it's time to let the Elizabeth Street Garden go, with the city ordering the garden vacated by the end of October. The first has been going since 2012 and the city has plans to build affordable senior housing at that location. (Kim Velsey for Curbed)
• A data leak appears to have named multiple active NYPD officers that are members of the Oath Keepers, the far-right militia that was heavily involved in the January 6 insurrection. The Gothamist report names names and ranks within the NYPD. (George Joseph and Micah Loewinger for Gothamist)
• The NYPD is hiring "greeters," like they were Walmart, whose sole job will be to "address everyone in a timely and courteous manner." There will be a greeter in each precinct in November. While the NYPD and the mayor are pushing this as a community service play, I see this as a way for the NYPD to shield themselves from having to interact with the public as much as possible. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• Where to eat in Bed Stuy. (Eater)
• Dr. Mary Bassett, the former commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from 2014 - 2018, was appointed as the next Commissioner of the Department of Health of New York State. (Ben Yakas for Gothamist)
• When asked why he didn't speak to a single guard or inmate during his first visit to Rikers Island in four years, Mayor de Blasio said "I don't need to be reminded of something I already know." You'd think if he already knew that we wouldn't be in this situation, right? (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• Not mentioned by Mayor de Blasio was that when he was taking his tour of Rikers on Monday, 1,200 people on the island were under a Covid-19 quarantine due to a staff shortage that prevented proper monitoring of newly-arrived detainees. As of Wednesday, more than 20% of the 6,000 people in the complex were under quarantine for "likely exposure." That's up for 1% in July. Only 48% of the Department of Corrections have received at least one dose of the vaccine. (Jake Offenhartz for Gothamist)
• Gothamist answers your questions about the city's new school quarantine rules. (Jessica Gould for Gothamist)
• The 76 best happy hours in Manhattan. (The Infatuation)
• The Nets' Kyrie Irving refuses to get vaccinated for Covid-19 and as a result, he will not be allowed into the Barclays Center for any playoff games and will not be paid for any games that he misses. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• How is it possible that Kyrie Irving can't play home games because he's unvaccinated but an actual moron Joe Rogan can play MSG to a crowd of slack-jawed mouth breathers without any concern to disclose his vaccination status? Only performers who live in the city or who represent home teams are required to be vaccinated. This is something the mayor described as not a loophole. (Christine Chung for The City)
• How to get a Covid-19 booster shot. Currently, people who received the Pfizer vaccines at least six months ago or more are eligible for a third shot. (Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner for Time Out)
• "Tastes like Lemon Pledge and smells like a burning joint." Pete Wells reviewed Eleven Madison Park's vegan menu and I wouldn't say it was a glowing review. (Pete Wells for NY Times)
• One thing that came out of the review of the all-plant Eleven Madison Park is that the restaurant has a "secret beef room." Grub Street answers your questions about it. (Alan Sytsma for Grub Street)
• Throwing some shade, Time Out has a list of "five actually good plant-based tasting menus in NYC. My favorite plant-based tasting menu would be walking into Screamers and ordering one slice of every pizza I can see. (Melizza Kravitz Hoeffner for Time Out)
• Real Estate Lust: A $26.5 million Greenwich Village townhouse rented by Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner over the summer with 8,700 square feet over six stories, six beds, eight baths, a backyard with an outdoor kitchen, wine cellar, terrace hot tub, a gym that comes with a sauna and wet bar, roof deck, and much, much more. (Dana Schulz for 6sqft)
• The Crown Heights Armory Rec Center is "the biggest failure New York City’s ever experienced," according to City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo. Cumbo's 2017 approval cleared the way for the project to move forward. (Gabriel Sandoval for The City)
• Nitehawk Cinema is back! The Brooklyn Horror Festival marks the return from October 14-21. (Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner for Greenpointers)
• Farewell to Burgie's, the Roberta's burger spinoff in East Williamsburg. (Emma Orlow for Eater)
• NYC Nightmare: A chunk of icy snow fell off WTC One and hit a pedestrian, according to a new lawsuit. (Kathleen Culliton for Patch)
• Governors Island will now be open year-round with ferry service from Brooklyn and Manhattan. (Ben Verde for Brooklyn Paper)
• Like all good things, the $97 van Airbnb on East Second has come to an end. Seven vans used as Airbnbs were impounded by the city this week. (Valeria Ricciulli for Curbed)
• Seven historic treasures to check out at the new NYPL Treasures exhibit. The walking stick left behind after Virginia Woolf's suicide is pretty haunting. (Devin Gannon for 6sqft)
• The Infatuation updated their NYC Brunch Directory with the additions of Yellow Rose, Porcelain, Aldama, Sona, and Ruta Oaxaca. (The Infatuation)
