Focus on the Election:
• 86,500 voters' voting locations changed between the June and August primaries. Make sure you know where you're going to vote on August 23. Also, check if you've got a primary to vote on. (Rachel Holliday Smith for The City)
• Even if you got a piece of mail from the Board of Elections, I wouldn't trust it. The BOE sent 17,000 voter registration updates containing incorrect congressional and state senate districts. Hooray. (Gwynne Hogan for Gothamist)
• Find your voting location. (Board of Elections)
• The state's Congressional races to watch in August. (Samar Khurshid for Gotham Gazette)
• A State Senate voter's guide. (Jon Campbell for Gothamist)
• Time Out gives a top-down view of what you need to know for the August 23 primary. (Anna Rahmanan for Time Out)
• Explaining what's happening with the city's school budgets as if it was written specifically for me. No matter the outcome, the students lose. (Jessica Gould for Gothamist)
• An op-ed from one of the people on the panel on the future of the BQE tries to make the argument for tearing it down. The argument is pretty weak, but the alternative is that we could wait for a disaster like the 2007 bridge collapse outside Minneapolis. (Carlo Scissura for Brooklyn Paper)
• Hey everyone, Polio was detected in the city's wastewater! Hooray! Make sure you were vaccinated. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• In the last edition, I linked to a story about Timothy Pearson, a friend of Mayor Adams, who was given a job with the city's Economic Development Corporation while also being a Vice President at Resorts World New York City and collecting an NYPD pension. Now that the story made this triple-income public, he's given up his job at the casino. The Times goes out of its way to note that the casino is "owned by a Malaysian gambling conglomerate," which is interesting. (Dana Rubinstein, William K. Rashbaum, Michael Rothfeld for NY Times)
• Speaking of casinos, the Mets are pushing to plop a casino in their parking lot, but there's a Mets chance in the playoffs of it happening, with The City outlining a long list of reasons it isn't very likely to happen. (Katie Honan for The City)
• The city jail systems continually fail to identify, protect, and properly care for transgender, gender non-conforming, nonbinary, and/or intersex (TGNCNBI) people in custody, according to a new report from a Board of Corrections task force. (Reuven Blau and George Joseph for The City in partnership with WNYC and Gothamist)
• The Times looks at each of the twelve deaths in the city's jail system this year, as the current pace suggests 2022 will surpass last year's eight-year high. (Jonah E. Bromwich and Jan Ransom for NY Times)
• Ricardo Cruciani, a neurologist facing a life sentence after being convicted of 12 counts of sexually assaulting patients, died by hanging on Rikers Island on Monday, despite directions from a judge that he be held in protective custody and under suicide watch. (Samantha Max for Gothamist)
• Six lost shipwrecks in New York history. (Catherine Ku for Untapped New York)
• You've done such a shitty job of killing all the spotted lanternflies that Senator Schumer is pushing for $22 million in funding from the USDA to finish the job. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• The Birth of Punk is an exhibit at the South Street Seaport, the least punk thing I could ever imagine happening. (Bill Pearis for BrooklynVegan)
• Kudos to the people who robbed Lululemon of $16,000 of merchandise. (Bobby Panza for I Love the Upper West Side)
• I want to experience joy like a humpback whale swimming in city waters. Yes, there are photos and videos. (Max Rivlin-Nadler for Hell Gate)
• Everything you need to know about buying an apartment with direct elevator access. Now all you need is to win the lottery. (Leah Hochbaum Rosner for Brick Underground)
• Apartment Porn: Use that new knowledge about elevator access with this $4.5 million Chelsea penthouse with a 1,600 square foot outdoor area, 13-foot ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace, a bonkers kitchen, exposed brick, of course, an elevator, and more. (Michelle Cohen for 6sqft)
• Glamping has come to the Greenpoint waterfront in by way of shipping containers. There's a discount code if you want to know what it's like to sleep in a shipping container on the East River. (Shaye Weaver for Time Out)
• Where to go: Oma Grassa in Fort Greene. What to eat: Red pie or eggplant parmigiana if you're not feeling pizza. (Scott Lynch for Brooklyn Magazine)
• The House of Cannabis NYC, a new “immersive cannabis experience” coming to Soho in the fall. (Clio Chang for Curbed)
• The City Council passed six new bills designed to protect access to safe and affordable abortions in the city. Mayor Adams signed them into law last week. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
• The New York Restoration Project this week installed 28 new Little Free Library at community gardens across the city. (Aaron Ginsburg for 6sqft)
• If you wanted poetry about a kitchen sink in a garbage pile, Washed Your Hands of This. (NYC Trash Stories)
• Staten Island Ferry workers and City Hall agreed to use a mediator to attempt to end the 12-year standoff. The last agreement was with Mayor Bloomberg. (Claudia Irizarry Aponte for The City)
• Eight of the most unique stores in the city. (Shiloh Frederick for Shiloh in the City)
• 11 stellar spots on Steinway St for Egyptian seafood, Moroccan tagines, Sicilian slices, and more. (Robert Sietsema for Eater)
