The "No Escaping Farts in New Subway Cars" Edition
Mayor Adams has a lower approval rating in NYC than President Biden does nationally, maybe this means that we'll see a credible primary challenge against the mayor?
Thank you to Pam, Sarah, KME/CEM/AM, Claire, and Michele for contributing to The Briefly on Ko-fi!

• Anyone got a spare $350 million lying around? That's how much the MTA says it needs to prevent fare hikes. (Kevin Duggan for Streetsblog)
• Photos: Take a look at the new subway cars, where you'll never be able to escape a nasty fart. (Emily Swanson for The City)
• Hell Gate: Peeing is believing in the renovated MTA bathrooms. (Christopher Robbins for Hell Gate)
• Mayor Eric Adams ended the city's municipal workforce vaccine mandate. (Yoac Gonen for The City)
• Mayor Adams's approval rating sits at 37%, down 6% from May. His approval rating is lower than de Blasio's at the same point in his mayorship. (Jeff Coltin for City and State)
• A note on Mayor Adams's budget regarding climate initiatives: It's not good news. (Rasemary Misdary for Gothamist)

• Streetsblog called all 51 City Councilmembers to find out their opinions on the future of outdoor dining. Only nine answered. This is cowardice. (Kevin Duggan for Streetsblog)
• Governor Hochul wants to make it possible for judges to ban people from using subways that have been convicted of assault or unlawful sexual conduct against passengers, customers, or MTA employees. I would bet every last dime I have on the implementation of this being racist. (Shaye Weaver for Time Out)
• Last year was the deadliest year in Rikers in the past 25 years. 2023's first death in Rikers happened over the weekend. (Michelle Bocanegra and Samantha Max for Gothamist)
• The Rikers Island Advisory Committee, a group tasked with advancing recommendations for what Rikers should become after it closes by 2027, has not convened since last summer. The city missed the deadline for transferring a closed facility to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. What's the point of deadlines or laws if the city faces zero repercussions when it flagrantly misses them? (Samantha Maldonado for The City)
• Yusef Salaam, one of the exonerated Central Park Five, is running for a City Council seat in Harlem's 9th District. Salaam is running against incumbent Kristin Richardson Jordan, a democratic socialist who ran on a progressive platform that called for free public transportation, prison abolition, and NYPD budget cuts for the Democratic nomination. (Michelle Bocanegra and Samantha Max for Gothamist)
• The Civilian Complaint Review Board received 750 complaints with over 2,000 allegations about the NYPD's conduct during the 2020 BLM protests. Three hundred twenty-one complaints were fully probed. Eighty-nine complaints resulted in substantiated allegations of serious misconduct against 89 police officers and supervisors. Only twelve have been disciplined. (Yoav Gonen for The City)
• 36 Black history sites to discover in NYC. (Noah Sheidlower for Untapped New York)
• The number of millionaires renting apartments in the city tripled in the last five years. The article says, "New York is the 'it' place for renters that earn over $150,000 per year." Funnily enough, following the adage that your income should be 40x your rent (which isn't realistic, but let's pretend) works out to $3,750/month in rent. The average rent for an apartment in Manhattan is $4,501. (Matt Troutman for Patch)
